Performance Sports Therapy – Ottawa

Should I get a massage before or after a game or race?

Either can work, but they are different sessions. A massage before an event should be lighter and booked a few days ahead, while a massage after is for recovery and can be firmer once the first soreness has settled.

The main rule: do not try anything new close to competition. If you have never had a deep massage, the week of your race is not the time to find out how your body reacts.

Before a game or race

  • Book your last firmer session several days before the event, so any soreness has time to clear
  • If you want a session closer to the day, ask for lighter pressure aimed at feeling loose, not at fixing problems
  • Tell your therapist the date and type of event so they can plan the pressure and focus
  • Stick with a therapist and style you already know

After a game or race

  • Give your body a day or two after a hard effort before deeper work, because tissue is already sore and tired
  • A gentle session sooner can feel good if pressure is kept light
  • Mention anything that felt wrong during the event so your therapist can check it and avoid aggravating it
  • Drink, eat and sleep well: massage adds to recovery, it does not replace it

During the season

Team-sport athletes with games every week usually fit sessions on lighter days, away from the hardest practices and games. Your therapist can help you plan a rhythm for the season. See how often should I get a massage?

When massage is not the right call

Skip the massage and get assessed if you have a suspected muscle tear, a swollen joint, sharp pain when you put weight on a limb, or a possible concussion. Physiotherapy or concussion management is the better starting point. Go to emergency for chest pain, trouble breathing, confusion or severe swelling in one calf.
