What is shockwave therapy and what does it treat?
Shockwave therapy sends pulses of sound energy into an injured area through a handheld device. It is non-invasive and used mainly for tendon and soft tissue problems that have not improved with rest and exercise alone. We use focused shockwave at our clinic.
Conditions it is commonly used for
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
- Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder
- Hip tendon pain on the outside of the hip
How it fits into treatment
Shockwave works best as part of a rehab plan with the right loading exercises, not on its own. It does not help everyone, and the research is stronger for some conditions than others. Your practitioner will tell you honestly whether it is worth trying for your problem.
Who should not have it
Shockwave is generally avoided during pregnancy, over a recent steroid injection site, with bleeding disorders or blood thinners, with a pacemaker, or over an infection or fracture. Your practitioner will screen you first.
