Focused Shockwave Therapy
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy sends pulses of sound energy into an injured area through a handheld device. It is non-invasive and is used mainly for tendon and soft tissue problems that have not improved with rest and exercise alone. At Performance Sports Therapy we use focused shockwave.
How does it fit into treatment?
Shockwave works best as part of a rehab plan with the right loading exercises, not on its own. Your practitioner will assess you first and tell you honestly whether it is worth trying for your problem.
Most common conditions treated include:
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
- Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder
- Hip tendon pain
What to expect
Treatment takes a few minutes and feels like rapid tapping on the sore spot. It can be uncomfortable, and the intensity is adjusted to what you can tolerate. Mild soreness or redness for a day or two afterward is common.
