Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. They use the same thin, sterile needles, but they come from different approaches.
The difference
- Traditional acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and places needles along defined points on the body.
- Contemporary medical acupuncture uses the same needles but chooses points based on anatomy and how nerves and muscles work.
- Dry needling places a needle into a tight band or trigger point in a muscle to help it release.
At Performance Sports Therapy we offer contemporary medical acupuncture and dry needling, provided by our physiotherapists and chiropractors as part of your treatment.
What it feels like
Most people feel little when the needle goes in. With dry needling you may feel a brief twitch or deep ache in the muscle. Some soreness for a day afterward is common.
Is it for everyone?
Tell your practitioner if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, or are uneasy about needles. It is always optional, and there are other ways to treat the same problem.
