Performance Sports Therapy – Ottawa

Is PEMF therapy safe, and how many sessions will I need?

PEMF therapy is non-invasive, drug-free and well tolerated by most people. It is generally avoided if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, or if you are pregnant. There is no set number of sessions: your practitioner recommends a plan based on your problem and reviews it as you go.

Who should not have PEMF

  • People with a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, cochlear implant, insulin pump or other implanted electronic device
  • Anyone who is pregnant

Who should check with their doctor first

  • People with epilepsy or a history of seizures
  • People being treated for cancer
  • People with a bleeding disorder or active bleeding
  • Anyone with a serious heart condition
  • Parents booking for a child

Your practitioner screens you before your first session. Tell them about any implants, including metal ones, and any health conditions.

Side effects

You will feel a pulsing, usually where the problem is, and it is always kept at a tolerable level. Most people have no after-effects. A few report temporary tiredness, mild aching or tingling in the treated area. Tell your practitioner if anything feels unpleasant during or after a session.

How many sessions

It depends on what you are using it for and how you respond. Research on PEMF for joint and muscle pain shows mixed results: some people report meaningful relief and others notice little. A sensible approach is to agree on a short trial with your practitioner, then decide together whether it is worth continuing. If you notice no change, the plan should change.

What PEMF does not replace

We use PEMF as an addition to a treatment plan, not a replacement for assessment, hands-on care and exercise. Pain that is new, severe, unexplained or getting worse should be assessed before any device-based treatment. See a doctor for pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, numbness or weakness.

Booking

PEMF can be booked on its own or added to a treatment. It can’t be booked online, so call us to set it up. For the basics, read what is PEMF therapy and what is it used for? or visit the PEMF therapy page.
