No. OHIP does not cover chiropractic care in Ontario. Most people pay through an extended health benefits plan from work or school, or pay out of pocket.
OHIP pays for services from physicians and a short list of other practitioners named in Ontario’s regulations. Chiropractors are regulated health professionals, but they are not on that list, so their services are not insured by OHIP.
Ways people pay for chiropractic
- Extended health benefits. Most workplace and student plans include chiropractic, usually up to a yearly maximum.
- Public Service Health Care Plan. Federal employees and retirees can read does the PSHCP cover physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage?
- RCMP, Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Canada. These are the plans we bill directly. See do you direct bill insurance companies?
- Out of pocket. You pay at your visit and get a receipt.
Questions to ask your insurer
- What is my yearly maximum for chiropractic?
- What percentage of each visit is covered?
- Does my plan year follow the calendar year or another date?
- Do I need a doctor’s referral for my claim to be paid?
- Is the first assessment covered the same way as follow-up visits?
Do I need a referral for my insurance?
You do not need a referral to see a chiropractor in Ontario. A small number of benefit plans ask for a doctor’s note before they will reimburse you, so check your plan booklet before your first visit.
Our fees are on the Pricing page. More about the service is on the sports injury focused chiropractic page.
