Your first appointment starts with a health history and a short conversation about why you are there, followed by a brief assessment, a treatment plan you agree to, and then the massage itself. You stay in control of pressure, the areas treated and what clothing you remove.
In Ontario, only people registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario can call themselves a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) or Massage Therapist. All of ours are.
Step by step
- Health history. You complete a form covering your general health, medications, injuries and conditions. This lets your therapist treat you safely.
- Conversation and assessment. Your RMT asks what brought you in and may check your posture, movement or specific muscles.
- Plan and consent. They explain what they recommend, which areas they will work on and why, and ask for your consent before starting or changing anything.
- Treatment. Your therapist leaves the room while you get on the table under a sheet. Only the area being treated is uncovered.
- After. You get advice on stretches or self-care and a suggestion for follow-up if it would help.
Your rights during treatment
- Undress only to your comfort level. Treatment can be done through clothing if you prefer.
- Ask for more or less pressure at any time
- Say no to treatment of any area
- Stop the session at any point
What to bring and how to prepare
- A list of medications and any relevant medical reports
- Your insurance details, and a doctor’s note if your plan asks for one: see do I need a doctor’s note for massage coverage?
- Avoid a heavy meal right before your session
- Tell your therapist if you are pregnant, have a recent injury, or take blood thinners
Not sure which style to ask for? Read sports, deep tissue or relaxation massage. Fees are on our Pricing page, and the service is described on the registered massage therapy page.
