Is a dietitian covered by OHIP or insurance in Ontario?

OHIP does not pay for visits to a dietitian in private practice, which includes our clinic. Many extended health plans do cover Registered Dietitian services, so most people use workplace or private benefits.

What to check on your plan

  • Whether “Registered Dietitian” is listed as a covered provider
  • The yearly maximum, and whether it is shared with other services
  • The percentage paid per visit
  • Whether the insurer wants a doctor’s note first

You pay at your visit and we give you a detailed receipt to submit to your insurer.

Publicly funded ways to see a dietitian

  • Health811. Ontario residents can call 811 or go online to speak with a Registered Dietitian at no cost, with no referral.
  • Family Health Teams and Community Health Centres. Many have a dietitian for their registered patients. Ask your family doctor’s office.
  • Hospital outpatient clinics and diabetes education programs. These usually need a referral from a physician.

These are good options for general healthy-eating questions or if cost is the main barrier. Wait times and how many visits you get vary by program.

When private care makes sense

People usually book privately when they want a longer one-on-one assessment, a plan built around training and competition, or regular follow-up. Our Registered Dietitians in Gloucester see clients for sports nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and meal planning.

No benefits?

You can still book and pay per visit. Fees are on our Pricing page. We do not list prices in our FAQs so they never go out of date.
