What happens during a VO2 max test?
A VO2 max test measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise. It is one of the best single measures of cardiovascular fitness, and research links a higher VO2 max to better long-term health.
How the test runs
- Setup. You are fitted with a mask that measures the air you breathe in and out. We use the VO2 Master analyzer, which is wireless, so there are no hoses.
- Warm-up. A few minutes at an easy pace.
- The test. You choose the treadmill or the bike. The effort increases in stages until you cannot continue. This hard portion usually lasts 10 to 15 minutes.
- Cool-down and results. You get your VO2 max and your personal heart rate training zones.
Who it is for
- Runners, cyclists, hockey players and other athletes who want accurate training zones
- Anyone curious about their fitness and long-term health
- People starting a training plan who want a baseline to measure against
You do not need to be an athlete to do one. If you have a heart condition or have been told to avoid hard exercise, speak with your doctor first.
Fees are on our Pricing page. Call 613-742-1230 or email info@pstottawa.ca to book a test.
