No to both. You can book directly with a chiropractor in Ontario without a doctor’s referral, and you do not need X-rays before your first visit.
Chiropractors are regulated health professionals who can assess you and communicate a diagnosis for conditions of the spine and joints. Your first visit starts with a history and physical exam, and that is enough to plan care for most muscle and joint problems.
When your insurer might want a referral
The law does not require a referral, but a small number of extended health plans ask for a doctor’s note before they will pay a chiropractic claim. Check your plan booklet or call your insurer before you come in.
When imaging is used
Most back, neck and joint pain does not need an X-ray. Imaging is considered when the history or exam points to something it would help clarify, for example:
- A significant fall, collision or other trauma
- Suspected fracture
- Pain that is not following the expected course
- Signs that suggest a problem beyond muscles and joints
If your chiropractor thinks imaging or a medical opinion is needed, they will explain why and tell you the next step.
If you already have imaging
Bring any reports you have from X-rays, ultrasound or MRI. They are useful background, but your chiropractor still examines you: what shows on a scan does not always match what is causing your pain.
When to see a doctor first
Go to emergency rather than booking with us for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin area, sudden weakness in an arm or leg, pain after a major accident, or back pain with fever or unexplained weight loss.
