How long do custom orthotics last?

Custom orthotics usually last a few years. How long depends on what they are made of, how much you use them and whether your body or activities have changed. The top cover often wears out first and can sometimes be replaced without remaking the whole device.

What affects their lifespan

  • Material. Firm shells generally outlast soft, cushioned devices.
  • Use. Daily wear, running, court sports and skating wear them faster than occasional use.
  • Body weight and load. Higher loads compress materials sooner.
  • Shoes. Worn-out or poorly fitting shoes shorten the life of what sits inside them.
  • Care. Heat and moisture break materials down.

Signs it is time for a check

  • Your original symptoms are coming back
  • Visible cracks, a flattened arch or a compressed heel
  • Uneven wear, or the device rocks on a flat surface
  • New pain in your feet, knees, hips or back
  • The top cover is peeling or worn through

When your needs change before they wear out

  • Growing children and teens can outgrow orthotics as their shoe size changes
  • A new sport or a big change in training
  • Foot or leg surgery, or a significant injury
  • Pregnancy or a notable change in weight

Looking after them

  • Take them out to air-dry if they get wet. Keep them away from heaters, dryers and hot cars.
  • Wipe with a damp cloth; do not soak or machine-wash
  • Move them between shoes with a similar shape
  • Replace worn-out shoes

Replacement and insurance

Many benefit plans allow a new pair every one to three years. Check yours before reordering: see are custom orthotics covered by insurance?

If you are unsure whether yours are still doing their job, bring them in along with the shoes you wear most. More detail is on the custom orthotics and bracing page.
