Performance Sports Therapy – Ottawa

What happens at my first chiropractic visit?

Your first chiropractic visit is mostly assessment: your chiropractor takes your history, examines you, explains what they found and recommends a plan. Treatment often starts the same day if it is appropriate and you agree to it.

Step by step

  1. Health history. You are asked about your current problem, how it started, past injuries, medications and your general health.
  2. Physical exam. This can include checking your posture, how your joints and muscles move, strength, and orthopedic and neurological tests.
  3. Explanation. You get a diagnosis or clinical impression in plain language, and time to ask questions.
  4. Plan and consent. Your chiropractor explains the recommended treatment, its benefits and risks, and the alternatives. Nothing is done without your consent.
  5. Treatment. This may include soft tissue work, joint adjustment or mobilization, taping and exercises to do at home.

What to bring and wear

  • Comfortable clothing you can move in, such as shorts and a t-shirt
  • A list of your medications
  • Any imaging reports you already have, such as X-ray, ultrasound or MRI results
  • Your insurance details if you plan to submit a claim

Do I need a referral or X-rays first?

No. You can book directly, and you do not need X-rays before coming in. More on this in do I need a referral or X-rays to see a chiropractor?

If chiropractic is not the right fit

If your problem falls outside what a chiropractor treats, you will be told and referred to another health professional, such as your family doctor.

Fees are on our Pricing page, and you can read about the service on the sports injury focused chiropractic page.
