For most sprains, strains and sports injuries, within the first few days. You do not need to wait for swelling to go down or for the pain to settle.

Why earlier helps

  • You find out what is injured and how serious it is
  • You learn what to keep doing and what to avoid, so you do not rest more than you need to
  • You start the right exercises sooner, which often shortens time away from sport

Go to emergency or see a doctor first if you have

  • An obvious deformity, or you cannot put weight on the limb
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness that is spreading
  • A blow to the head with confusion, repeated vomiting or worsening headache
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain

What about pain that has been there for months?

It is not too late. Long-standing pain still responds to treatment, though it usually takes longer.
