What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist in Ontario?

In Ontario, “dietitian” is a regulated title and “nutritionist” is not. A Registered Dietitian (RD) is licensed by the College of Dietitians of Ontario, while anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, whatever their training.

What makes someone a Registered Dietitian

  • A university degree in food and nutrition from an accredited program
  • Supervised practical training
  • A national registration exam
  • Registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario, which sets standards and handles complaints

Look for the letters RD (or Dt.P. in French) after the name. You can confirm that someone is registered on the College’s public register.

What about nutritionists?

Some people who use the title nutritionist are well trained, and some public health nutritionists are also dietitians. The difference is that the title itself is not protected in Ontario, so there is no regulator checking education or standards behind it. If you are unsure, ask whether the person is a Registered Dietitian.

Why it can matter for you

  • Medical conditions. Dietitians are trained to provide nutrition care for conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease, and to work alongside your doctor.
  • Insurance. Many extended health plans cover Registered Dietitian services. Plans often do not cover unregulated providers, so check the wording of your plan.
  • Accountability. A regulated professional answers to a college if something goes wrong.

Who you see here

The dietetics service at Performance Sports Therapy in Gloucester is provided by Registered Dietitians. That covers medical nutrition therapy, sports nutrition for athletes of all levels, meal planning and weight management.

Nutrition advice does not replace medical care. If you have unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing or symptoms that worry you, see your doctor first.
