Ottawa registered massage therapy

What should I expect at my first appointment with a Registered Massage Therapist?

Your first appointment starts with a health history and a short conversation about why you are there, followed by a brief assessment, a treatment plan you agree to, and then the massage itself. You stay in control of pressure, the areas treated and what clothing you remove.

What is the difference between sports, deep tissue and relaxation massage?

The difference is the goal. Sports massage is planned around your training and injuries, deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer pressure on stubborn tight areas, and relaxation (Swedish) massage uses lighter, flowing strokes to ease general tension and stress.

Do I need a doctor’s note for massage therapy to be covered?

It depends on your insurance plan. You never need a doctor’s referral to book with a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Ontario, but some extended health plans will only reimburse massage if you have a doctor’s note on file.

Is it normal to be sore after a massage?

Yes. Mild soreness or tenderness for a day or two after a massage is common, especially after deep tissue or sports massage or if it has been a while since your last one. It usually feels like the ache after a hard workout and fades on its own.

Should I get a massage before or after a game or race?

Either can work, but they are different sessions. A massage before an event should be lighter and booked a few days ahead, while a massage after is for recovery and can be firmer once the first soreness has settled.

How often should I get a massage?

It depends on why you are coming. There is no single schedule that suits everyone, so your Registered Massage Therapist suggests one after your first session, based on your goal, how your body responds and what your budget or benefits allow.
