Why is one of my hips higher than the other?
A hip that sits higher on one side is often due to muscle tightness or imbalance, the way you stand, or a slight difference in leg length. Small differences are common and not always a problem. If it comes with pain or affects how you move, a chiropractor or physiotherapist can assess it.
Common causes
- Tight or overactive muscles on one side of the hips or low back
- Habits like standing on one leg or carrying a bag on one shoulder
- A structural or functional leg length difference
- A curve in the spine, such as scoliosis
What can help
- An assessment of posture, hips, spine and feet
- Mobility and strength work for the hips and core
- Hands-on treatment where appropriate
- Footwear or orthotics, if a leg length difference is confirmed
When to get it checked
